Special birth of pygmy hippopotamus at ZooParc Overloon

After a gestation period of 198 days, pygmy hippo Bagatelle gave birth to a cub. The delivery went smoothly and mother and cub are doing well. The gender of the pygmy hippopotamus is still unknown. Considering the parents already raised a healthy young 3 years ago, chances are good that the maternity period will go well. Still, the time ahead remains exciting.

The birth of a pygmy hippopotamus is very special. Only nine pygmy hippopotami were born in Europe this year. There is therefore a European breeding program for these animals. The pygmy hippopotamus is a seriously endangered species in the wild. This is because its habitat is shrinking faster due to the rise of humans, leaving less habitat for the pygmy hippopotamus.

Maternity visit and name contest!

This weekend this special birth will of course be celebrated at ZooParc Overloon! Besides the regular feeding moments (at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. during the weekend), extra activities and moments will be organized in which visitors can ask caretakers everything about the newborn pygmy hippopotamus. In addition, all visitors may also enter a special name contest for the pygmy hippopotamus.
